Notes
The cascade of interventions is when one intervention in birth leads to complications that cause a domino effect of more interventions. This is a common occurrence in births in the medical system.
Some things that trigger the cascade of interventions
Induction
Artificially breaking waters
Epidural
IV drugs
In many instances, these practices cause problems because they disrupt the normal physiology of and birth by interfering with the hormonal matrix, creating opportunities for infection, having dangerous effects on mothers and babies, and making it harder to birth. Every intervention has the potential to cause harm or disrupt the birth process leading to the domino effect of interventions.
Pitocin Induction -> unnaturally painful contractions -> epidural -> stalled labor, difficulty pushing, or fetal distress -> surgical birth
The best way to avoid unnecessary interventions is to birth at home and choose your birth attendants wisely.
